Making Your Own Window Cleaner
(All-Purpose Surface Cleaner)

Ingredients:

  • Lemon

  • Vinegar

  • Water

  • Soap (liquid hand soap/dish detergent)

Items Needed:

  • Empty spray bottle

  • Container for mixing

  • Cutting board

  • Knife

  • Measuring cup (optional)

  • Strainer/Sieve

1. Containers

Making your own window cleaner is a simple task. Try to reuse an empty bottle of window cleaner (or another spray bottle). Just rinse the inside. You will need a separate container to prepare the cleaning liquid.

2. Lemons

Depending on your country, lemons come in different sizes. In Sri Lanka we have small lemons. They are a little expensive but their smell is so good and it goes well with apple cider vinegar. Mixing vinegar with lemon juice gives more effectiveness to your final product. Juice six lemons into your container (I slice the lemons into two). Add the peels to the juice.

3. Water

Add to the lemon juice to one cup of water. In Sri Lanka it is better to use filtered water than tap water.

4. Vinegar

Add one cup of apple cider vinegar. I use apple cider vinegar because it is easy to fine in glass bottles. Coconut vinegar is cheaper but sold in plastic bottles. I am trying to find a place where they sell it in glass bottles. Do not use artificial vinegar. In Sri Lanka more and more companies are selling vinegar in plastic bottles. Try to find a shop selling vinegar in glass bottles. Those glass bottles will be reused when making your laundry softener.

5. Soap

Finally, add a few drops of dishwashing liquid or hand soap. Stir the mixture well and cover it with a lid. Leave it for 12 hours on the side of your sink.

6. Time

Let it sit for 12 hours. Use a strainer or a sieve and pour the liquid into a clean container. Then pour the brown liquid with its fresh lemon smell into your spray bottle. You can use the mixture to clean your windows, your sink, kitchen and practically all surface in your house. For the floor, I recommend a slightly different mixture. See the section on floor cleaner [TO COME].

When your spray bottle is nearly empty, you start the same operation again. You’ll see, your house will be shining and smelling of natural fresh lemons!

The same recipe can be made with grapefruits or oranges. For the oranges, avoid sweet oranges and use sour oranges.
